The Bottomless Boat: Breaking Free from Modern People’s Obsessions

At 11:43 p.m., Lin Qingmu jolted awake from a nightmare. Once again, she had seen the phantom of her younger sister, Lin Nian, accompanied by the shrill sound of brakes. The car accident had kept her imprisoned by guilt for a whole year. As a nurse, she still couldn't forgive herself for failing to save her sister. Late at night, a call from Cloudwhirl Lake pierced the darkness. Legend has it that desperate souls follow its call. Amid the dense fog, Lin Qingmu saw an ancient ship with no bottom: its hull was open beneath, yet it never sank. Pale moonlight revealed the phantom obsessions of those who boarded. This was the “Ship of Severance.” The old boatman explained that the ship did not consume sincere feelings. It only stripped away the shackles created by modern society, such as self-denial and being held hostage by labels. Those who faced its trials had to confront their pain, not change the past. Each passenger was bound by a different obsession: Zhu Xiaoyan was trapped in workplace manipulation, Jiang Chen was held captive by the label of his prestigious university degree, businessman Zhao Kun was consumed by greed for money, and Granny Chen clung to her longing for her son. Lin Qingmu watched Zhu Xiaoyan awaken, Jiang Chen find release, Zhao Kun fall into the lake fog because of his obsession, and Granny Chen leave the ship carrying her sincere love. She was deeply shaken. When her sister's phantom appeared again and asked, “Sis, why didn't you save me?” Lin Qingmu finally saw the truth within herself: she feared being blamed by others even more than she feared admitting she wasn't all-powerful. The trial taught her that true redemption does not mean forgetting, but accepting imperfection. The bottomless ship never sinks because the soul was never meant to carry such a burden. Lin Qingmu casts off the shackles of self-punishment and makes peace with her past. She finally understands that freedom does not come from running away, but from embracing herself with tenderness.
