The Green Army: Our Different North Garden

In Boston in 1997, the Celtics are mired in the worst stretch in franchise history, with a record of 15 wins and 67 losses. The lights at the FleetCenter are dim, and the glory of the Green Team is fading amid the league’s changing landscape. This is both the starting point of a dynasty’s revival and a pivotal moment in the restructuring of the team’s operations. The front office turns away from short-term gains and makes key decisions with an eye to the future: passing on risky prospects, trading a high draft pick for future selections, and building a rebuilding framework around cornerstone talent. The novel follows the Celtics’ rebuilding and development, faithfully recreating the realities of NBA operations. Every trade and signing takes salary calculations, budget planning, and commercial impact into account, laying out the full process of shaping the roster, refining tactics, and developing the business side of the team. From draft battles and free-agent moves in the offseason, to responding to shifts in performance and developing core players during the season, to adapting to league rules and labor dynamics as part of a long-term strategy, the story presents the Celtics’ rebuilding journey from every angle. The story also brings Boston’s sports culture into contact with the wider landscape of American sports business, exploring how the city’s traditional sporting heritage can merge with the league’s commercial boom and highlighting the close bond between the team and its city. Setting aside the usual basketball-novel formula of focusing on games while neglecting operations, it puts “operations drive competition” at its heart. It portrays the front office’s strategic maneuvering, the team’s growth as its members learn to work together, and the gradual expansion of its business empire, tracing the Celtics’ full journey from the depths of decline to a steady resurgence and, ultimately, another push toward the glory of a dynasty, showcasing the Green Team’s resilience and ambition to rise again.
