By chance, Li Wei uses a family heirloom, an antique bronze mirror, to establish a visual and auditory connection with Chen Yuan, a sent-down youth from 1977. The two points in time meet on the eve of the announcement that the college entrance examinations will be reinstated in 1977. After their initial shock and suspicion, the extremely pragmatic pair quickly realize just how valuable they are to each other.
