Fan Xiaoxiao, an overworked midwife at a county maternal and child health hospital, transmigrates into Tong Xiaolu, the daughter of a traveling doctor in the Song dynasty during the Xianping era. Faced with primitive childbirth practices and a staggering maternal and infant mortality rate, she takes a medical text in one hand and a homemade scalpel in the other, determined to spread sterile techniques and modern maternity care throughout the Song dynasty. She focuses on treating patients and making money, while her father provides emotional support and takes the blame. Together, they travel from town to town, eventually turning their mobile street stall into the Song dynasty’s first specialized maternal and child hospital.
