Modern Earth contains two parallel realms: the “Visible World,” a technological society as ordinary people understand it, and the “Hidden Domain,” a secret realm where the strange beasts of the Classic of Mountains and Seas and remnants of ancient tribes endure. The two worlds are faintly connected through “spiritual leyline nodes,” such as ancient tombs buried deep underground, remote mountains not yet fully developed, and ancient texts and artifacts that carry primordial energy. As human activities such as industrial pollution and over-exploitation cause the energy in these leylines to steadily wane, the Hidden Domain teeters on the brink of collapse, and the living spaces of its strange beasts are rapidly shrinking.
