From a Rental Room to Northern Myanmar: My 180 Days in Hell

At thirty, Chen Lei lost the only shred of dignity he had, his job as a security guard at a publicly listed company, after being unfairly made the scapegoat. The mildew stench in his rented room in the urban village, half a month without income, his mother’s calls demanding that he pay his younger sister’s tuition, the hospital bills for his bedridden father, and the cold barriers on recruitment apps, “Under 35” and “No experience, don’t apply,” formed a net that trapped him in a corner of the city and left him struggling to breathe. He tried selling goods on the street and got chased by city inspectors, took daily-wage jobs and had his pay withheld, and even the residential compound security team thought he was “too old and lacking energy.” When simply surviving became a problem, recruitment videos promising “3,000 yuan a day in northern Myanmar, meals and accommodation included” became his only lifeline. But the moment he arrived in northern Myanmar, his passport was snatched and his phone confiscated. Only then did he see the hell behind the “high salary”: beatings, electric shocks, and forced participation in scams. Eighteen hours of compulsory work, starvation and punishment for failing to meet quotas, and fugitives beaten until their legs broke and thrown to the dogs… From discarded employee to scam tool, Chen Lei struggles in despair, every step marked by the helplessness of an ordinary laborer and the cruelty of reality. Adapted from real experiences, this story offers no triumphant comeback, only bloody reality: when life backs you into a corner, the so-called “shortcut” may be the entrance to hell.
