The Pretty Bride

Synopsis

In the winter of 1940, beneath the Japanese invaders’ iron heel in Yezhupo, Mudanjiang, the Quainiang Tavern opened its doors to guests amid wind and snow. Its proprietress, Lin Xueqiao, was dazzling and fiery, and her culinary skills drew customers from far and wide. She walked a fine line between the Japanese and their puppet regime, doing whatever she could to survive in a world in turmoil.

But this tiny tavern was never destined to remain a haven from the storm. When Chen Mo, the underground Communist Party operative known as “Green Pine,” infiltrated the area, he drew her into another, hidden battlefield. Inspired and guided by him, Lin Xueqiao resolutely joined the cause. From then on, the bustling tavern became a vital intelligence hub for the Party. Enemy movements were concealed in exquisite dishes, and secrets passed between clinking cups. Together with her loyal protector, Zhao Meng, she grew through one heart-pounding mission after another.

But danger shadowed her every step. Shrewd and calculating, Yamaguchi Koichi, head of the Japanese secret police, turned his keen instincts on the “Quainiang,” who was far too clever for her own good. Probes, traps, and manhunts followed one after another, while loyalty and betrayal played out in an instant. After losing comrades and enduring the crucible of blood and fire, Lin Xueqiao shed her last traces of weakness. The orphan who had once fought for personal revenge became a revolutionary with unshakable faith.

When the darkest hour before dawn arrived, her identity teetered on the brink of exposure. Lin Xueqiao would have to rely on extraordinary intelligence and courage to face her most dangerous adversary in a final showdown, determined to get intelligence vital to the fate of the Northeast out of this frozen land. This is a stirring ode to heroines, clad in tenderness and armed with wisdom, written in the ink of youth and blood.
