The Battle to Hold the Line Before Dawn

"The Battle to Hold the Line Before Dawn" is set during the 1949 Hunan Campaign and focuses on the crucial Battle of Majitang. On April 21, 1949, the Crossing of the Yangtze Campaign began. A million-strong People's Liberation Army swept across the river, and the Yangtze defensive line painstakingly built by the Kuomintang collapsed in an instant. Its troops were routed.

At the time, Bai Chongxi was head of the Kuomintang's Central China Military and Political Headquarters, stationed in Wuhan to oversee the river defenses. As the tide of battle turned sharply against him, he led his troops in a panicked retreat south, hoping to flee west through Changde and Majitang in Hunan to Guangxi and continue resisting in a desperate bid to preserve reactionary rule. The People's Liberation Army pressed its advantage and pursued the enemy. Fighting over strategic routes spread across Hunan, and Majitang became a key battleground because of its important location. A major battle was about to begin.

Through the campaigns of the two heroic regiments, the 440th and 441st, the work vividly recreates the military miracle of two People's Liberation Army regiments holding off three Kuomintang reorganized divisions. From the nighttime crossing of the Zi River to the bloody battle at Huanglifu, from the struggle for Wujialun to the seesaw fighting at Jiulishan, it portrays the strategic insight of commanders such as Zhan Yigui and Xu Changgeng during fifty-six hours of fierce combat, records the heroic sacrifices of rank-and-file soldiers such as Qiu Wanshun and Cui Qiang, and tells a moving story of soldiers and civilians standing together. When the mountain artillery battalion's guns tore through the last line of defense, this battle, forged from the blood and fire of youth, thwarted Bai Chongxi's group's attempt to flee west and sounded the overture to Hunan's liberation against a vivid red backdrop.
