Broken Light in Qicheng

The start of senior year at Qicheng Vocational High always carries the mingled scent of osmanthus and solder.

In the world of orphan Qiyu, the steel plates in the training building and the old silver lock from the orphanage are the only things she can count on. That is, until she meets Lin Xiaoman, the girl who always wears a pale blue dress and secretly slips osmanthus candy into her canvas bag.

Together they pick osmanthus blossoms in the morning mist, weld crooked iron flowers in the arc-lit art room, braid bracelets with red string, and fold stars into glass jars. Lin Xiaoman says, “Once we've collected a hundred stars, I'll make you a new star lamp.” What Qiyu never says is that ever since she met Lin Xiaoman, her world has already been lit up.

The days at vocational school are full of little moments of warmth: welds growing straighter beneath the welding torch, daisies secretly stitched onto uniform cuffs, two little figures holding hands molded from frosting on a birthday cake, and two iron flowers welded together on the back of an old student ID.

When they write “pair” on the skills competition application, and osmanthus candy fills their jars all autumn long, the two girls finally realize that some feelings have already fused like iron and fire, welded by time into something inseparable.

This is a story about growing up and the bonds we form. Amid the scent of welding sparks and osmanthus blossoms, two girls keep their gentlest secret: it turns out that liking someone means wanting to weld every ordinary day into something bright, together.
