My Wife Is the Ming Dynasty's Number One Netherworld Mistress

After pulling an all-nighter revising his thesis, modern history graduate student Lin Yan died suddenly and transmigrated into the Ming dynasty as a poor scholar. The moment he opened his eyes, his gambling-addict father had him bound and sent to the Jing'an Marquis Household to bring good luck to the family through marriage. His bride was none other than Shen Qingning, the so-called “Great Ming’s First Netherworld Master,” rumored to have caused the deaths of her three previous fiancés. He thought he’d landed in a death-trap the moment he transmigrated, but then he discovered that the “cursed” young lady of the marquis’s household was a sweet, shy, and delicate girl by day, and a cold, ruthless master of the Netherworld Pavilion by night, equally skilled at hiding knives under the bed and scaling walls. On their wedding night, he got blasted with medicinal soup, sent flying after triggering a hidden mechanism, and hid in a cesspit to evade pursuers. Using his modern knowledge and historical imagination, Lin Yan struggled to survive one farcical mishap after another, and was forced to strike a “partnership agreement” with Shen Qingning. Together, they investigated the wrongful extermination of her household and took down the treacherous Yan faction. To make matters worse, three eccentric women became entangled in his life: Su Lingwei, a Jinyiwei officer who insisted on accounting for every tael of silver; the scatterbrained doctor Liu Qingyan, who put bitter gentian in everything as if it were sugar; and Murong Xue, a mischievous intelligence chief who liked to guess coin tosses and cheat. From the chaotic daily life at the marquis’s household, to the treacherous power struggles at court, to a perilous manhunt in Jiangnan, Lin Yan was constantly thrown between Shen Qingning’s adorable sweetness and ruthless ferocity, while the three women’s blunders left him laughing and crying in equal measure. As the secret behind his sweet, gentle wife came to light and the plots at court emerged layer by layer, this farcical marriage of convenience would shake the Ming dynasty and write a turbulent romance that crossed the boundary between life and death amid laughter, tears, and bickering.
