My Shanghai Wife and Our Life Together

An earthquake brings Zhang Yuan, a young man from a rural village in western China, together with Lin Wei, a white-collar professional in Shanghai. Their vastly different upbringings, spending habits, and life goals quickly send their marriage from bliss into the mire of reality. Zhang Yuan’s frugality strikes Lin Wei as “stinginess,” while he labels her refined lifestyle “vanity.” Arguments, cold wars, and even thoughts of divorce become routine in their marriage. But fate takes a turn when Zhang Yuan returns to his hometown. Witnessing its poverty and lack of educational resources, he comes up with the idea of helping poor students. Lin Wei initially scoffs at him, but a chance volunteer teaching trip moves her with the children’s innocence. The couple go from opposing one another to working together, and Zhang Yuan’s idealism sparks unexpectedly with Lin Wei’s practical abilities. Together, they face a shortage of funds, villagers’ doubts, policy obstacles, and even another crisis in their marriage. Over the course of ten years, their poverty-relief project grows from a tiny reading room into an education program serving the entire county, while their relationship is tempered and strengthened through hardship. As the winds of rural revitalization begin to blow, the once “Shanghai wife” and “rural husband” finally discover each other’s worth and find common ground. The birth of their child brings this love story spanning city and countryside to a happy conclusion, while opening a new chapter in their lives. This is a realistic novel about marriage, ideals, and personal growth. With a delicate touch, it portrays how love takes root amid differences and blossoms through dedication.
