In her previous life, Chi Xianyu was a fish, a two-thousand-year-old vengeful spirit wandering the River of Forgetfulness in the underworld.
Her memories of that life had long since grown hazy. She only remembered that, long, long ago, while she was happily playing in the moat around a city, a great fire took her young life. When the city gates catch fire, even the fish in the moat suffer. People had repeated this saying for a thousand years, and it had also given her a trickle of faith. And so the little fish naturally gained intelligence.
Once, the King of Hell was shocked to discover the only living creature in the River of Forgetfulness. When he went to see for himself, he realized there was nothing to worry about. A little fish that forgot what had happened seven seconds ago even without the river’s water, and was protected by faith, could reasonably survive in the River of Forgetfulness without its soul dissipating.
Over the course of more than two thousand years, countless wronged souls caught in others’ misfortunes crossed the Bridge of Helplessness. The memories of their past lives, which they had forgotten, did not sink into the River of Forgetfulness. Instead, they carried their resentment with them and were absorbed by the little fish. She was not just a fish caught in someone else’s misfortune, but a learned, nearly all-knowing fish of the River of Forgetfulness. The memories brought by the faith behind the saying “even the fish in the moat suffer” were not instinctively forgotten by the little fish. They became part of her very soul.
Who knows how much later, the King of Hell was amazed to discover that the little fish had earned enough merit to be reborn as a human. With a grand sweep of his brush, the King of Hell sent the little fish, who had been living freely in the River of Forgetfulness, to become Chi Xianyu, the unlucky little princess of the Chi family in the capital. Er, the King of Hell admitted he might have rushed things and should have let the little fish earn a little more merit before sending her to the mortal world. After all, she was a fish raised in his own river. So he would send another fish to the mortal world as well, and let the two of them share a bond!
