The Legend of Guanyin Through the Ages

The Legend of Guanyin Through Past Lives and This Life

In the morning mist over the Purple Bamboo Grove in the South Sea, a Sanskrit chant that spans lifetimes is always drifting through the air. It is the lingering echo of Bodhisattva Guanyin's vows across countless lives.

In a past life, she was Princess Miaoshan. She sacrificed herself and gouged out her own eyes to save her father, then vowed before the ancient Buddha, “May I become a thousand-handed, thousand-eyed savior and free all beings from the world's suffering.” Her vow beneath the lotus throne became an undying light through the cycles of rebirth. Across several lives in the mortal world, she was a shepherdess who fed starving travelers with a compassionate heart, a wandering monk who lit the way for the lost through wind and rain, and even a fisherwoman who rescued capsized boats amid raging waves. In every life, she etched the meaning of “compassion” into her soul amid the daily bustle of human existence.

In this life, she resides in the South Sea. A gentle touch of her willow branch brings relief from droughts and floods, while a sweep of her purifying vase heals pain. When she sees the sorrow of parting in the human world, she becomes a breeze to soothe those pining for their loved ones; when she hears of illness and hardship, she manifests to bring health and peace. The memories of her countless lives are not mere traces of the past, but the strength that lets her guide others across. Only those who know hunger and cold can truly understand the warmth of giving; only those who have known the terror of losing their way can grasp the preciousness of guidance.

The wind still blows through the Purple Bamboo Grove. Her legend is no lofty myth, but every time she bent down to help across countless lives, every gentle response she offers in this one. Year after year, she makes her heart a lamp to light the way forward for all living beings.
