The Legend of the Seeker of Sainthood

Sun Ying, a country boy whose parents died when he was young, grew up boarding with his older brother’s family, enduring every kind of abuse. The scars covering his body were irrefutable proof.

His sister-in-law was a shrew, and his brother was spineless and useless.

When Sun Ying was thirteen, the brothers split up their household. All he received was a frail old monkey.

He thought this was simply how his life would be, but then one day the old monkey suddenly spoke human words. It was a monkey from Flower-Fruit Mountain. If Sun Ying wanted to change the course of his life, he should follow the monkey in practicing qi and meditating, and take a different path. There was just one catch: that path meant facing death nine times out of ten.

Sun Ying burst out laughing. “Nine chances in ten of dying? Isn’t my life already worse than death?”
