While staying up late to finish a manuscript, modern historical romance author Su Zhenshu transmigrates into the Northern Song capital of Bianliang from her own novel, where she becomes a lonely young woman seeking a match. Hoping to steer clear of the plot from the start and stay safe, she unexpectedly runs into Xie Linzhang, the prison office's investigating officer and the "Detective Dee of Bianliang" from her own story. He's investigating a murder at a Guanyin temple with far-reaching implications. She has the author's omniscient view of the plot, but insists on going against the original storyline: she doesn't use a golden finger or steal the heroine's spotlight. Instead, she opens a matchmaking bureau in Bianliang, uses modern ideas to bring couples together, and puts her author's foreknowledge to work helping Xie Linzhang uncover clues in the case. But the one who writes the story ultimately becomes a character in it. When the author's script collides with the detective's insistence on getting to the bottom of things, she realizes that the matchmaker's goddess has already entwined her and Xie Linzhang in a whirlpool of investigations and romance.
