Haitan's Lost Dream

Introduction to The Lost Dream of Haitan

Haitan Island is battered by fierce winds, its soil thin and its resources scarce. When Lin Shouye had nothing, Su Wanqing defied everyone’s objections and married him. The two pledged to stay together at Longwangtou Beach. After their son Xiaoyu was born, Lin Shouye followed fellow villagers to the Middle East to earn a living digging tunnels. But a phone call answered by his wife’s best friend’s husband planted the seed of suspicion in his heart.

Su Wanqing held the family together on her own. She worked to earn money while carefully raising their son and managing the household. She scrimped and saved to send her husband clothes and care packages, and repeatedly took him back to Longtan in hopes of rekindling their affection. Yet she never won Lin Shouye’s trust or appreciation. Lacking emotional intelligence, he twisted her sacrifices into proof that she was hiding something. His cold words slowly extinguished her love, and the two eventually divorced.

Years later, Lin Shouye returned wealthy, only to come to his senses among the empty old house and their belongings. He regretted losing the best wife in the world. For the long years that followed, he remained alone, pacing every day along Longwangtou Beach and recalling the warmth of the past as the tides ebbed and flowed. He spent the rest of his life in loneliness, paying for his foolishness and suspicion, with nothing left but a lost dream of Haitan, love, and a chance forever missed.
