A Plain-Language Guide to The Secret Records of the Stone Chamber

This book offers a systematic translation into plain language and a distinctive interpretation of the Qing-dynasty classic of traditional Chinese medicine, Secret Records of the Stone Chamber. Many of the treatments and prescriptions recorded by the author, Chen Shiduo, are ingenious in conception and remarkably effective, and they continue to shine in clinical practice today.

Our aim is not only to transform the dense classical prose into modern language anyone can understand, but also to include two sections after every chapter: “Exploring Subtle Mysteries” and “Clinical Reflections.” The first delves into the text’s key concepts and reasoning, while the second shares the translators’ genuine insights, drawing on modern life and clinical practice to bridge the gap between past and present and offer practical guidance for better health today. This is a translation faithful to the original, and also a key to unlocking the clinical thinking of traditional Chinese medicine.
