Construction worker Wang Ergou unexpectedly takes on a special mission from the Myriad Realms Takeout Shop, accepting orders born of lingering obsessions that cross the divide between life and death. He delivers more than ordinary meals: he brings warmth and hope that can ease the regrets of the dead. With Xiaoya, a little ghost with braided pigtails, by his side, and special items such as a Luban lock, a peachwood bead bracelet, and a lantern to guide the way home, he repeatedly ventures into places steeped in the past, from abandoned opera stages and old furniture factories to deserted bus stops. There, he faces the ghosts still lingering in the world because of unfulfilled wishes.
He helps veteran mason Zhou Jianguo make amends for a responsibility he never apologized for, resolving two decades of guilt through rusty nails and old opera lyrics. He helps master carpenter Zhao Mushan break the deadlock over passing on his craft, using traditional mortise-and-tenon woodworking to reconcile the old with the new. And he accompanies bus driver Li Dahai on the last bus, twenty years overdue, bringing a father and daughter together and passengers home. As the sweet aroma of cornmeal porridge fills the air, their obsessions finally fade. With every completed order, Wang Ergou unlocks new skills such as Opera Stage Restoration and Yin-Yang Navigation, and adds safety barriers like Opera Stage Shelter and Bus Stop Shelter to the takeout shop. And through his empathy for the ghosts, he grows from an ordinary delivery guy who was afraid of ghosts into a dependable, compassionate ferryman for the dead.
There are no terrifying evil spirits in this story, only souls burdened by regret: an apology never spoken, a gift never given to a newly trained apprentice, a family farewell that came too late. Wang Ergou's delivery box carries steaming food, but also understanding and redemption that bridge the divide between life and death. Through one heartwarming tale after another, the story reveals the tenderness and affection ordinary people carry within them through the years.
