An Idealist in Troubled Times

Told through multiple interweaving storylines, the novel unfolds in a modern metropolis plagued by incessant warfare and frequent changes of power, as well as across vast frontier regions. Sean Mahler, a retired journalist, moves among all kinds of groups, documenting the absurdities of a troubled age and witnessing both the grotesque nature of the system and the struggles of individuals. Leah Greyman tends to the injured amid the ruins, holding fast to the faint light of humanity alongside her companions. Tarek Andy leads a team of scattered fighters, deftly navigating warlords, the government, and black-market forces while clinging to justice through self-deprecating humor. Bernard Wolfe treads the corridors of power: outwardly loyal to the system, he secretly works to bring about reform. Mingyuan, meanwhile, connects numerous grassroots organizations, becoming a voice for the ideal of peace amid the chaos. The five storylines advance side by side through artillery fire, power struggles, and the shocks of an absurd system. Their groups clash and cooperate, resisting fate with humor, satire, and warmth. Through confusion and struggle, each character grows resilient in the narrow space between ideals and reality. Together, they ultimately bring about a peace initiative, offering hope to a world in turmoil. With its brisk pace, dramatic twists, and humorous, satirical take on a cast of characters caught in chaos, the novel concludes with ideals and reality brought together.
