The Journey to the West: Tribulation of Demon Subduing

Five hundred years after the pilgrimage succeeded, the Celestial Court and Spirit Mountain have grown rigid in their ways, using “Heaven’s mandate” to unjustly oppress all living beings in the lower realms. A lingering resentment left behind on the pilgrimage, the remnant soul of the Great King of Inspiration, gathers the hatred of every demon Sun Wukong and the others “eliminated,” transforming into the “Demon of Ten Thousand Resentments.” Rather than seek revenge directly, it quietly infiltrates the Three Realms and creates “mirrors of karma,” forcing the pilgrimage team to face the past they least wish to revisit: the unknown tragedies and wrongs suffered by the monsters they claimed to have “acted on Heaven’s behalf” to eliminate.

Tang Sanzang and his disciples must set out once more, but this time their mission is not to obtain the scriptures, but to “make amends.” As they uncover one buried truth after another, they begin to question the justice of “Heaven’s mandate.” Trapped between an unjust Heavenly Dao and vengeful demons, they ultimately fight their way toward a path of truly “saving all sentient beings” that belongs to them alone.
