In the modern age, when the gods have become mere figures of myth and legend, the once-weak deity Jumang, who presided over “contracts” and “good faith,” awakens after a thousand years of slumber, having lost all his divine power, in the blood of a human boy named Lu Ren. He discovers that he has become a “guardian spirit” inside the boy and can survive only by relying on Lu Ren's meager “faith,” the power of trust and promises. To regain his strength and reclaim his place among the gods, Jumang must guide Lu Ren in carrying out the ancient duties of the “God of Contracts” in the modern city, resolving supernatural incidents caused by broken trust. Along the way, they must contend with evil gods coveting Lu Ren's body and the Godslayer organization, which hunts the surviving deities.
