Trust That Spans the World: Lessons from Modern Commerce

Introduction to "Trust Across the World: Lessons in Modern Commerce"

Shen Zhiyuan, a descendant of Shanxi merchants, founds Zhiyuan Home, a cross-border furniture e-commerce business, but soon becomes mired in a crisis of trust and a battle over capital. Guided by his grandfather’s "Shanxi Merchants’ Handbook of Trust", he combines traditional commercial wisdom such as “trade across the world” and “share the risks” with modern models like blockchain traceability and shared supply chains. He joins forces with small and midsize factories to break down barriers to trust and withstand pressure from investors seeking short-term gains.

From forming a shared alliance of ten factories to building a trust network spanning fifty overseas clients, Shen Zhiyuan, COO Lin Wan, factory owner Zhao Lei, overseas buyer Su Man, and others hold fast to the principle of “building business on trust” through rising raw material costs, counterfeit products, and a global logistics crisis. In the end, they take Zhiyuan Home public and elevate Shanxi merchants’ tradition of trust into an industry standard for cross-border home furnishings, giving traditional commercial wisdom a new life in the modern business world.
