Using the five central causes of the Ming dynasty’s fall as its guiding thread, the story spans ten volumes and 150 chapters, tracing history from the Wanli Emperor’s neglect of government to the prosperous reign of Kangxi. Each volume focuses on the central conflict of a particular period, such as the eclipse of imperial authority in Volume One and the collapse of Liaodong in Volume Five. The chapters form a complete arc through the fates of figures such as Yuan Chonghuan, Li Zicheng, the Chongzhen Emperor, and Zheng Chenggong, as well as connected events, such as factional strife continuing from the Donglin and eunuch factions into the Southern Ming. The narrative follows the historical timeline while highlighting deeper forces such as institutional rigidity, economic imbalance, and pressure from both within and without. Finally, Volume Ten reflects on the early Qing dynasty’s reconsiderations and reforms, bringing the historical reverberations of the Ming collapse to a close.
