The Ancestral Dragon Comes to the Ming Dynasty

The Core Personality of Qin Shi Huang, Ying Zheng:

Grand ambition and absolute control: He was the ultimate practitioner of China's ideal of unification, with a vision that reached beyond his era. He could not tolerate division or weakness, seeking absolute order through “one written script and uniform axle widths.”

Suspicious, harsh, and quick to kill: Having grown up amid court intrigue in the state of Zhao, he had an extreme lack of personal security. He had zero tolerance for betrayal and employed ruthless, decisive methods, as seen in the cases of Lao Ai and Lü Buwei. He believed in “severe punishment for minor offenses” to intimidate the realm.

Utilitarianism and rejection of benevolent rule: He was the foremost proponent of Legalist thought. In his eyes, Confucian virtues of benevolence and righteousness were poison that weakened the state. Only laws and farming and warfare could make a country strong.

A sense of urgency beyond his era: He spent his entire life racing against time, driving monumental projects with extraordinary energy. This urgency stemmed from his overwhelming desire to build a foundation that would last for generations.

The Central Predicament of the Late Ming (the Chongzhen Reign):

Internal and external crises, financial collapse: Within the country, the peasant armies of Li Zicheng and Zhang Xianzhong swept across the Central Plains. Beyond the borders, the Eight Banners of Manchuria loomed menacingly. The treasury was empty, while most of the additional “three military levies” went into officials' private pockets.

Factional strife and a sclerotic system: The civil bureaucracy, including the Donglin faction and remnants of the eunuch faction, was consumed by factional disputes. The emperor's edicts could not get beyond the Forbidden City. To protect their own interests, the powerful gentry resisted any reform that struck at the roots of the system.

An information vacuum and mutual distrust between ruler and ministers: Chongzhen lacked ability and was suspicious. In seventeen years, he replaced fifty chief ministers and executed countless high-ranking governors and officials, including the unjust execution of Yuan Chonghuan. This drove a wedge between ruler and ministers, leaving him with no one he could use and no one he could trust.
