The Chronicle of Emperor Xian’s Revival: Raising the Han Banner Again

In the final years of the Eastern Han dynasty, Dong Zhuo seized control of the government, while Li Jue and Guo Si brought calamity to the capital. Emperor Xian, Liu Xie, was reduced to a puppet, and the dying flames in Weiyang Palace cast flickering light over blades and bloodshed. The fate of the Han dynasty hung by a thread. As blood beneath the palace walls stained his imperial robes, the young emperor, dismissed as a ruler doomed to lose his country, refused to endure humiliation any longer. Amid the chaos, he fled Chang'an by night with a loyal servant, leaving false signs that he was heading for Hanzhong while secretly taking a roundabout route through Longxi to seek refuge among the Qiang tribes. Using half of his late father's jade token to earn their trust, he won over the Qiang with a plan to divide the pastures by season. He trained elite Qiang and Han troops according to the Han military system. From two hundred death-defying warriors to an army of thirty thousand, from the small city of Fuhan to the master of Longyou, he advanced step by step, breaking the shackles of a fractured age. He burned supply routes to break through Chencang, relied on allies within to retake Chang'an, killed Li Jue at the North Gate, and raised the Han banner once more over Weiyang. He repelled Kebineng of the Xianbei at Yinshan, burned Wuchao to defeat Yuan Shao in Hebei, captured Cao Cao at Guandu, subdued Liu Zhang in Chengdu, and crushed Zhou Yu at Red Cliffs. After twenty-five years of campaigning, he defeated all his rivals and united the Nine Provinces. In his thirty years on the throne, he abolished harsh laws, promoted farming and sericulture, established the Imperial Academy, and opened routes to the Western Regions. He brought refugees back to their fields and fostered coexistence between the Han and other peoples. The population recovered to fifty million, and the golden age of his restoration saw a return to a world where nothing was stolen from the roadside and no one barred their doors at night. This is no tragic puppet from the history books who “abdicated in favor of Cao Pi,” but an emperor who secured the realm through wisdom and brought peace to the people through benevolent rule: the Emperor Shizu, who restored the Han. It is an epic tale of a prisoner’s rise to sage ruler, and a stirring ode to loyalty, strategy, and the revival of the nation.
