In the world of Lin Xi, a 21st-century art student, the bronze ring left by her grandmother was just a keepsake. But when the ancient ring engraved with the character "Illusion" cut her finger, a strange light flashed, and she found herself in Meteor City, the harshest place on the Hunter Continent.
During the twelve years she was adopted by the Zoldyck Family, Lin Xi went by the name Illumi Xi. In this dog-eat-dog world, she awakened two forms of Nen: the "Illusory Domain Barrier," which lets her teleport into the ring's space when danger approaches, and the "Mind's Eye," which lets her read people's thoughts by touching them. These abilities are both gifts and curses: every time she uses the Mind's Eye, she randomly forgets a precious memory; if she relies too much on the barrier, her existence in the real world gradually vanishes.
The wheels of fate begin to turn. She saves Hisoka when he's under attack, and the Mind's Eye first loses control, letting her read his twisted battle aesthetics and bloodlust. Three years later, she witnesses Chrollo and his group slaughter her family. As she flees, she touches the troupe leader's fingertip and accidentally glimpses the massive plan for Greed Island.
From then on, she struggles to survive between these two dangerous men. Hisoka's love is a destructive possessiveness. At the top of Heavens Arena, he deliberately touches her, letting her clearly read his mad fixation: "I want to turn you into the perfect apple." Chrollo's love is a possessive need to keep her imprisoned like a collectible. During a waltz at the Yorknew City auction, he gracefully takes her hand, while his mind is full of the desire to possess her: "This soul is more enticing than any ancient book."
From the battle of wits on Greed Island to the decisive battle on the Dark Continent, Xi's abilities are pushed to their limits. When overuse of the Mind's Eye temporarily blinds her, Chrollo saves her with a stolen "Book of Healing"
