Lin Yan, a poor student at Qiantang Academy, is mocked by aristocratic cultivators for having “no immortal root.” But during a crisis in an ancient tomb, he accidentally touches the “World-Burning Spark” left behind when Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai transformed into butterflies in the Southern Song dynasty. This power can ignite the deepest obsessions in all things. It turns Liang Shanbo's lingering soul into a controllable sword immortal puppet, while Zhu Yingtai's remnant soul becomes a bonded sword spirit capable of sensing traps in myths.
By then, the Three Realms have long since fallen into ruin. The immortals and gods have been missing for a hundred years, and the ancestors of the aristocratic clans have joined forces with higher-dimensional beings to establish the “Heavenly Dao Council.” They monopolize power through “immortal root rankings” and manipulate demons and monsters to wreak havoc. Even Bai Suzhen beneath Leifeng Pagoda and the sword immortals of the Shu Mountain Sword Sect have become their prisoners.
To shatter this unjust order, Lin Yan opens the “Baoshantang Clinic.” On the surface, it treats unusual ailments afflicting demons and monsters, such as nourishing the demon core of a fox spirit after childbirth and helping a river god who has a talisman stuck in his throat. In truth, Lin Yan is bringing together poor cultivators and gentle demons to form the “Obsession Alliance.” Along with the souls of Liang and Zhu, he breaks through the traps at Leifeng Pagoda and uncovers the secrets of the Shu Mountain Sword Mound. He also joins forces with mythic figures from different realms, including the ghost-transformed Jiang Ziya and a descendant of Taotie, to expose the Council's ultimate plot: “sacrificing the Three Realms to summon the Void Devourer of Gods.”
As the “Rebooting Heaven and Earth” ritual draws near, Lin Yan uses his own resolve to protect others as a catalyst, burning away the Three Realms' resentment to form a grand array. He not only shatters the passage to the higher dimensions, but also declares, “No obsession is greater or lesser. Love, hate, and ideals can all become sources of strength.” In the end, the old order crumbles and the “Obsession Council” is born. The guardian spirits formed from the souls of Liang and Zhu bear witness to a new mythic age, one in which no one is ranked by their immortal roots.
