When Time Leaves Us Forgotten in a Lonely Corner

On his seventieth birthday, Chen Jingming, a once highly respected middle school teacher, was tricked by his son, Chen Jianguo, into entering the Sunset Red Paradise nursing home under the pretense of going on a “trip.” By the time he realized what had happened, his son had already driven off into the distance, leaving him with nothing but a cold, carefully packaged “abandonment.” Here, he met all kinds of “prisoners”: • His roommate, Zhou Shoucheng, used a sharp tongue as armor while secretly planning his “final release.” • Grandma Su sat by the window all day, waiting for a “lover” who would never come. • Old Li, a veteran, dug holes in the yard every day, saying he was trying to find his “roots.” The nursing home was a gilded island, their children, who “performed filial devotion,” were the audience, and they were goldfish in a bowl, put on display to give the onlookers peace of mind. Chen Jingming had meant to spend the rest of his life with his eyes open, but by chance he discovered Zhou Shoucheng’s hidden terminal illness diagnosis and a mysterious key... When a sudden epidemic cut the nursing home off from the world, all their disguises were torn away. Chen Jingming and Zhou Shoucheng, two old men with very different personalities, decided to lead everyone in one final “prison break,” a fight to live in the face of death. They weren’t trying to escape the place, but to reclaim the dignity and freedom that time and the world had taken from them.
