Ten years ago, a young man left a small town in Jiangnan without a word, leaving Shen Ying behind with a promise neither of them had spoken aloud. Ten years later, he returns as an architectural designer with a “Old Town Renewal Plan,” only to become the very thing threatening what Shen Ying has vowed to protect. The area he plans to renovate holds Yingji Bookshop, passed down through Shen Ying’s family, and the old lanes around it, which are filled with memories of the two of them.
One is a clear-eyed planner determined to push the project forward; the other is a gentle guardian determined to preserve her home. Their reunion immediately puts them at odds: she blocks the construction crew and argues fiercely on behalf of the longtime residents, while he brings out his blueprints and tries to win her over with talk of “development.” But when Tian Xu spots a faded high school photo on the bookshop wall, sees her caring for her grandmother alone as the older woman suffers from Alzheimer’s, and helps repair the leaking shop on a stormy night, he also uncovers the truth behind his sudden departure all those years ago. Beneath the cold project plans, guilt over his hometown and concern for the woman he once knew slowly come to light.
Pressure from investors, the old-lane residents’ hopes, and the grandmother’s occasional “unexpected assist” bring the two from opposition to cooperation. Together, they scrap the original plan and gather stories from the old lanes to make a documentary. Their new proposal, which “preserves the original character while adding modern functions,” saves both the bookshop and their memories while giving the town a new lease on life. In the end, Tian Xu chooses to stay in his hometown, and Shen Ying’s bookshop becomes a landmark of the old town. In the sunlit old lanes, the two finally continue the story they left unfinished years ago.
