1969: The Vanished Female Art Troupe Member

Did I marry the grandson of the man who murdered my family?

Lu Chenzhou and I were the kind of loving couple everyone envied.

He was a brilliant young talent, and I was a documentary filmmaker. We married for love, and we were a perfect match in every way.

Then, while preparing a memorial exhibition for my grandmother, I repaired the only dance shoe she had left behind when she disappeared 56 years ago.

Hidden in the sole was a farewell letter in her own handwriting:

“To my sister: If you’re reading this, I’m already gone. The one who killed me was Lu Beichen.”

That was my husband Lu Chenzhou’s biological grandfather.

The official story said my grandmother, Lin Chaoyue, was a dancer who had defected.

But her diary proved she was still alive five years after her supposed “death,” and named his grandfather as the culprit.

My husband, the man I loved with all my heart, looked at me with fear for the first time.

He held me tight, his voice breaking with anguish. “Yanyan, please stop digging! There are truths we can’t bear to face!”

I didn’t believe him. I went north alone, into the snowy wilderness where my grandmother had disappeared.

Then came the failing brakes, the midnight blaze, and anonymous death threats over the phone…

Every clue pointed coldly to one name: Lu Beichen.

Only when I found my grandmother’s true final message did I understand: It was all part of a “deadly spy operation” that had begun in 1969.

And that diary was the last act of protection she had written for Lu Beichen, at the cost of her life.

But as we uncovered the truth, we also awakened a specter that had lain dormant for half a century…
