Modern-day criminal investigator Gu Bei is chasing a criminal when he is sucked into the wordless ancient bamboo slips of the Yin-Yang Library. He becomes a Dali Temple investigator known by the codename “Wuchang,” and is forced to transmigrate through five dynasties, Qin, Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing, solving bizarre cases “history dared not record.” Each solved case adds a line of blood-red writing to the slips. Only when the writing fills the entire scroll will he have a chance to return to his own body, but in the end he faces the ultimate dilemma: “cutting himself off.”
