The Kingdom Buried in Dust

Synopsis of Dust-Bound Bones Achen, a commoner from the northern desert, saved the dying young prince Xiao Jin at a mass grave ten years ago. Half a flatbread and a body covered in wounds earned him a promise: “When I take power, I’ll give you a lifetime of peace.” Ten years later, Xiao Jin ascended the throne and traveled south to find him, only to throw him into the imperial prison on charges of treason. The emperor’s realm had no room for weakness, and his old promise became the first blade to pierce Achen’s heart. Imprisoned deep within the palace, Achen went from a condemned servant to the emperor’s secret obsession, struggling between humiliation and tenderness. Torn between imperial power and love, Xiao Jin slaughtered his rivals for Achen, yet pushed him toward the abyss for the sake of the court. Threats from enemy states, a political marriage, public humiliation: their love was crushed to dust, and Achen’s dignity trampled underfoot. Clutching the plans for the little house he had spent ten years drawing, Achen stood on the city wall and heard Xiao Jin’s decree: “I won’t yield an inch of my realm. What does a condemned servant matter?” The blood he coughed up stained the last trace of warmth in the emperor’s eyes. At last, Achen, exhausted and near death, bid farewell with half a flatbread he had treasured for ten years. Xiao Jin held sway over a vast empire, yet could only hide Achen’s ashes inside his imperial robes. Every night for the rest of his life, he was tortured by Achen’s last words: “In the next life, I hope we never meet.” This is a story of imprisonment in the name of love, a betrayal wagered against an empire. In the end, only an emperor left alone to guard his glorious realm and a heap of dusty bones remain, enduring an eternity of atonement together.
