Medicine Rules the Land

Synopsis of The Medicine That Unifies the Realm

At the end of the Eastern Han dynasty, epidemics rage and the realm lies in ruins. After witnessing hundreds of members of his clan die from typhoid fever, the young Zhang Ji, also known as Zhongjing, resolutely abandons Confucian studies for medicine, vowing to “treat the illnesses of rulers and parents above, and relieve the suffering of the poor and lowly below.”

Amid the flames of war and the suffering of the people, he studies medical texts extensively and draws on prescriptions from many sources. Even while serving as the governor of Changsha, he continues to see patients. He distills a lifetime of clinical experience into the sixteen volumes of Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases, establishes the Six Channel Pattern Identification system, and lays the foundation for clinical Chinese medicine. Yet this monumental work has barely begun to circulate when war leaves it scattered, damaged, and incomplete.

Centuries later, during the Wei and Jin dynasties, Imperial Physician Wang Shuhe, deeply troubled by the decline of medicine, devotes himself to searching for Zhongjing’s surviving manuscripts, verifying their authenticity and reorganizing their contents. At last, he ensures that Treatise on Cold Damage is passed down. Several centuries later, during the Northern Song, Lin Yi and others are ordered to collate the texts, bringing Zhongjing’s teachings back into the light and establishing them as “the source of all methods and the ancestor of all prescriptions.”

Through the lives of physicians such as Zhang Zhongjing and Wang Shuhe, and tracing the transmission of Treatise on Cold Damage and Synopsis of the Golden Chamber, this book tells an epic story of healers preserving the flame of civilization amid sweeping changes. Silver needles can ease pain, and classic prescriptions can cure chronic illness, but more immortal than medical skill is the heart of a great physician, one who keeps the flame alive in the darkness for all the people.
