She likes how “harmless” I am, keeps me in her sanctuary, and confides all her secrets to me.

She has no idea that every time I eat one of the magic crystals she feeds me, the underground hive expands by half a mile.

When she boasts about the invincible elven dragon knights, my wyverns are already blotting out her sky.

When she weeps over the kingdom’s survival, my sea of insects has already swallowed her borders.

Later, when the royal capital falls, I sit upon a throne of flesh and blood.

Kneeling beneath me, she looks up and asks, “Who are you, really?”

I lean down, just as she once bent over me to tease me, and whisper:

“Let’s get reacquainted. I’m your keeper, and this world’s apocalypse.”
