The Spy Hippie

Shanghai, 1936. Beneath the neon lights of the Paramount Ballroom, undercurrents are stirring. Modern-day comedian Zhou Mo transmigrates by accident and becomes a “traitorous lackey” in the eyes of the Japanese and their puppet regime, a “mahjong good-for-nothing” to the Military Statistics Bureau, and the “stinky tofu spy king” in the eyes of the Communist underground. He relies on a bizarre golden finger: making people laugh lets him identify Japanese spies, because Japanese spies have a peculiar sense of humor! He dances on the edge of a knife, swapping secret documents inside jars of stinky tofu, broadcasting coded orders through comedy routines, and even tricking the head of the 76th Division into performing a rainmaking ritual.

But when he uses fireworks to spell out “Bastard” and mock the Japanese army, then turns mahjong tiles into bombs to blow up an enemy camp, the brilliant young female spy Miyeko of the Japanese Special Higher Police sets her sights on him. “Is this man a clown or a demon?” Zhou Mo just wants to ask, “Big brother System, making Tojo Hideki laugh counts as a mission? Aren't you taking this a bit too far?!”

A rip-roaring spy comedy that shows how one ordinary man uses laughter to shake up a chaotic age!
