After Falling into the Yellow River, I Became My Family's Heartache

In the rural Shaanbei of the early 1960s, Li Qiucao’s life is shrouded in hardship from the moment she suffers a postpartum hemorrhage. Her domineering mother-in-law is a cold shackle, trapping her in exhausting labor and endless grievances. Her spineless husband never stands up for her in front of his mother, leaving her to bear the full weight of life alone.

She pins her hopes on her son, scrimping and saving for half her life so he can have a proper, respectable wedding. When he marries, she thinks her hard days are finally over. But fate bares its cruel fangs once more: at sixty, she receives a diagnosis of terminal stomach cancer, like an invitation from the Grim Reaper.

Unwilling to burden her son, she swallows her pain in silence and uses her last bit of strength to cook one final family reunion dinner. The meal holds her deep love for her family, as well as her helpless surrender to fate.

The next day, she puts on her neatest clothes and walks toward the Yellow River Bridge. The rushing waters of the Yellow River have witnessed her bitter life. She leaps in, composing a silent song of sorrow with her life. Her husband, meanwhile, remains immersed in his mother’s world, entirely unaware of his wife’s despair.

Qiucao is gone, taking all her pain and bitterness with her. Her story is a portrait of the tragic fate of rural women in that era. It sends ripples of sorrow through the river of history, leaving readers unable to help lamenting her plight.
