Lin Yue, a modern forensic pathologist specializing in toxicology and trace evidence, accidentally transmigrates to the Dayong Dynasty. From the start, he becomes the son of a “traitor,” scheduled for execution in three days. In this desperate situation, he relies on two golden fingers to turn things around: modern forensic skills to expose “supernatural” hoaxes, and his right hand’s ability to sense uncanny objects and read the memories contained in clues.
From uncovering fragments of the Twelve Treasures in the case of a brothel singer haunted by a “ghost,” to discovering the secrets of a bronze mirror in an “animated corpse” case at a burial house, he grows stronger with every strange case. He clears his name, joins the Night Watch, and makes allies such as the stern but protective Zhao Zheng and the aloof, research-obsessed Su Qingyuan. Together, they confront Li Song, who seeks to seize the Twelve Treasures and resurrect his ancestor, and Zhao Dechang, who uses curses to grab power.
As his investigations spread from the capital to the provinces, Lin Yue gathers all twelve national treasures and uncovers the truth behind the curse that “no imperial male heir lives past forty.” He also clears his father of the charge of treason. At the ancestral worship ceremony, he leads his team to foil a plot involving vengeful spirits controlling the treasures and corpse puppets surrounding the city, lifting the curse and protecting Dayong. But then he discovers fragments of the Twelve Treasures in the burial house, setting in motion an even greater cosmic mystery.
The concept of this novel is indeed exquisite. Its world view or core setting is novel but not exaggerated, and it can naturally promote the development of the plot. The rhythm of the story is particularly well controlled, with a degree of relaxation. There are both tense conflict outbreak points and soothing moments of emotional precipitation. The plots are interlocking and there is no sense of stagnation. Reading it as a whole, from the suspense at the beginning to the conclusion at the end, the whole process is smooth and compact, making people immersed in it and unable to stop. The reading experience is very hearty.
