A Clear-Eyed Resistance

Set against the political landscape of Jingzhou, a city in a southern province, this story follows Lin Chen, an economics PhD from a humble background, as he rises from the grassroots ranks to the heart of power through solid achievements and idealistic convictions.

Jingzhou lies on the coast, where reform brings both opportunity and challenge. Collusion between officials and businessmen behind development-zone land disputes, backroom deals over the old-city redevelopment, and factional infighting during personnel reshuffles form an airtight web of power. Lin Chen holds fast to his original aspiration: to serve in office and bring prosperity to the people. He strives to protect displaced farmers' rights during resettlement and curb polluting companies as industries transform, but time and again he crosses the lines of entrenched interest groups.

He must contend with the suspicion and manipulation of his superiors while guarding against underhanded attacks from colleagues. He has to find room to survive amid complex factional struggles, yet endure isolation for being “out of step with the times” whenever he holds to his principles. From the township to the city bureau, and from the city to the province, every step of Lin Chen's advancement comes at a price: a close friend is forced to resign after exposing a scandal, the woman he loves is caught up in a power struggle and used as a pawn, and even his family is repeatedly threatened. By the time he finally nears a position where he can fulfill his ambitions, he discovers he is already trapped in a desperate situation: “Either join the rot or be swept away by the tide.”

Through Lin Chen's twenty years of ups and downs in officialdom, the novel exposes how “unspoken rules” erode “official rules” in modern politics and how ideals are torn apart by reality. It shows how a good official who wants to serve the people struggles, stands firm, and compromises amid the whirlpool of power, ultimately asking: In a murky reality, is there truly no way forward for idealists?
