Lament of the Tanguts: A Record of Western Xia's Rise and Fall

The story spans from the reign of Chongzong of Western Xia in the late 11th century to the fall of Western Xia in 1227, covering the pivotal period in which the kingdom rose to prominence, declined, and was ultimately destroyed by the Mongols. Centered on Xingqing Prefecture, present-day Yinchuan, the setting extends across the Hexi Corridor and the Helan Mountains, encompassing settlements of the Tangut tribes, the Song-Xia border, and the Mongolian steppe. It depicts the Tanguts’ way of life, combining nomadic herding with farming, as well as Western Xia’s complex relations with the Song, Liao, Jin, and Mongols.
