The Starving Army

The general asked, “What did he steal?”

“Food!” came the reply.

This wasn’t greed. It was survival.

The general asked, “Whose food did he steal?”

“The rich man Wang’s.”

He hadn’t robbed ordinary people. He’d taken from the rich, without touching the poor’s lifeline.

The general said, “Let him go.”

This wasn’t favoritism. It was a shared understanding:

“When I’m starving, I steal too.”

That line was the best of all: “When I’m starving, I steal too.”

It wasn’t the law. It was plain human speech.

The general didn’t talk about the law of the land. He spoke with compassion.

He knew hunger wasn’t a crime, but a warning sign;

he knew that one less meal for the rich and one more bite for the poor could mean the difference between life and death.

But we should be wary, too.

This logic is about taking sides, not following rules.

Today he lets someone off for “stealing food,” tomorrow he might let someone off for “robbing the rich to help the poor.”

And the day after that? Does being poor make you right, and being rich mean you deserve to die?

In short:

The general’s words show the compassion of the underworld, not the justice of the court.
