Old Dreams of a Deep Mansion

On a rainy night, Xiaocui, a maid, runs in a frenzy out of the century-old Shen manor, screaming, "The paper dolls are alive!" Fang Yuanzhe, a Western-trained doctor recently returned from overseas, is ordered to investigate and steps into this estate, forgotten by the age. Beneath its faded splendor, a woman in Qing robes weeps at midnight, an heirloom jade artifact shatters for no reason, and a disabled young master's neck bears inexplicable marks of strangulation... Scientific diagnosis points to mass hysteria, but can reason truly contain the truth? As the storm of land reform closes in on the family estate, the Shen family's closest relatives die one after another, their deaths peaceful yet bizarre. Working with the gentle Miss Shen, Fang Yuanzhe tries to fight the curse of the manor with love and science, unaware that step by step, he is writing the final bloodstained chapter of the family's history of blood and tears. What does this man-eating mansion really devour: the resentment of the dead, or the sins of the living? Open this book and listen to the echoes deep within an old dream. The answer may send a chill down your spine.
