Shanghai, 1925. Su Manqing, a progressive female student, is hunted for promoting patriotic ideas and takes refuge in the residence of Lu Chengze, a warlord. Lu seems cold and ruthless, but secretly supports the revolution, and Su's fervor moves him. The two support each other through turbulent times. Su uses her identity to pass along intelligence, while Lu protects her. But their differences in allegiance force them to make a choice, and ultimately they join forces in the struggle to save their country.
