During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Lanzhou was a vital hub on the international route connecting China and the Soviet Union, a major military center in the northwest, and a key city in the rear. Underground operations there were exceptionally complex and crucial. Various forces vied for control, making the work multifaceted, interconnected, and extremely dangerous. As a strategic hub in the northwest and a key point on the route for Soviet aid to China, Lanzhou's political importance continued to grow. Set against the covert conflicts from the War of Resistance through the early years of the People's Republic, "Out of Sync" depicts a decade-long partnership between Ma Lan, an underground Communist Party operative, and Chen Qing, a codebreaking expert. Codenamed “Nightingale,” Ma Lan uses her exceptional intelligence and multiple identities to move among the enemy. Chen Qing, an undercover agent codenamed “Out of Sync,” spends his days in safe rooms and listening to radio waves. Together, they face the tangled enemy situation in Jincheng, Lanzhou. Working seamlessly to overcome one crisis after another, they pass intelligence by exploiting time differences, creating an “out of sync” method of operation. From breaking Japanese military ciphers to exposing the Kuomintang's “Gecko Plan,” one dances in the spotlight while the other moves the pieces behind the scenes, building an underground Great Wall through unconventional communication networks.
