Synopsis

During the reign of Emperor Ningzong of the Southern Song, the realm is in turmoil. The Mongols lurk beyond the northern frontier, while Jin invaders repeatedly attack from the south. In Lin'an, Shi Miyuan seizes power under the guise of the Jiading peace treaty and secretly nurtures the sinister Dry Bones Sect, which specializes in slaughtering loyal officials and eliminating dissent. Blood stains both the jianghu and the imperial court. Su Zhengqing, an army officer, gets his hands on a secret letter revealing that Shi's faction is colluding with the Mongols. Framed, he sees his entire family wiped out. His thirteen-year-old daughter Su Xiaolian escapes with half of the secret letter her father left behind, thanks to a loyal servant who gives his life for her. But the Dry Bones Sect pursues her relentlessly, cornering her in a reed marsh. As she teeters on the brink of death, she meets fifteen-year-old Yin Liyang. Yin Liyang is the son of a frontier general who fought against the Jin. His father was imprisoned after Shi Miyuan framed him for denouncing the peace treaty as a disgraceful surrender. Carrying half of a saber engraved with the words “Serve with Utmost Loyalty,” Yin heads south to escape the danger. Seeing the killing intent about Su Xiaolian and the tears in her eyes, he realizes she is the daughter of a wronged official. He draws his saber and drives off her attackers, then says in a low voice, “With treacherous ministers in power, we share the same fate. Come with me!” The two flee west together, repeatedly besieged by the Dry Bones Sect and surviving countless brushes with death. At Mount Tianmu, they meet a reclusive elder, once a fierce general who fought both the Jin and the Mongols. Having seen the imperial court betray the country and brave men lose heart, he retreated to the mountains. Seeing that the two carry family vendettas yet remain true to justice, he takes them as disciples. He teaches Su Xiaolian the Secret Manual of a Hundred Poisons and the Snow-Treading, Traceless Lightness Skill, using poison to subdue enemies and save lives, and lightness skills to evade danger and escape. He teaches Yin Liyang the seventeen forms of the Blazing Sun Sword, whose strikes blaze like the scorching sun and are designed to break the sinister sects' soft, yielding techniques. In this dark and chaotic age, the elder seeks to forge the two youngsters into blades that can pierce the darkness.

Wuxia Stories, But No Leveling Up, Robbery, or Treasure-Filled Secret Realms

I’m not really into those stories where the protagonist shows off, wins through face-slapping, and gets some super-rare treasure. No System stories either.
