Resistance Against Japan: From Puppet Army Battalion Commander to Our Army's God of War

Ling Yun, a modern-day military academy cadet, transmigrates overnight to 1937, a year engulfed in war, and becomes a badly wounded Nationalist officer commanding a shattered company on the Shanghai battlefield. To preserve the last sparks of life around him, he swallows his pride and is forced to take on a new identity in the Wang Jingwei puppet regime, gaining the title of “provisional battalion commander” and a barren foothold.

In public, he is a “model puppet soldier,” praised time and again, who obeys orders only when he chooses. In secret, he hones his troops with modern military principles, using tactics far ahead of their time to eliminate strongholds and ambush supply convoys, struggling to grow in the narrow space between the Japanese, the puppets, and the die-hard Nationalists. Training at Panshi Town, the bloody battle at Kusong Ridge, the desperate stand at Gushan... His knowledge gives him an edge, but cannot spare him the brutality and sacrifice of war. The pleas of loyal veterans, the final songs of passionate students, the fall of stalwart soldiers... Every victory is soaked in the blood of his comrades.

Secret contact with the Eighth Route Army’s underground organization and an unspoken understanding with Li Yunlong’s unit show him another kind of strength and hope. The Japanese army’s mounting suspicions, the puppet regime’s relentless pressure, and the countless traps within his own ranks make him realize that his position is already perched on a sheer cliff’s edge.

As the Japanese army closes in with overwhelming forces and fire and blood drive his last remaining troops into a desperate corner, a bright path from the Taihang Mountains quietly comes into view. What will Ling Yun choose? How will this iron-blooded force, flying the puppet army’s flag but loyal to its homeland, break free of its chains and achieve an astonishing transformation from darkness to dawn?

This is a stirring epic of resistance against Japan, following a transmigrator amid his nation’s peril as he forges a true iron army in the mire of loyalty and betrayal, conspiracy and sacrifice, and ultimately finds his faith and his place in the world.
