A New Interpretation of Homer's Epic

Summary of Episode One of The Hyacinth of Ithaca Nineteen years after Odysseus left home, Queen Penelope of Ithaca is still fending off her suitors by weaving and unraveling a burial shroud, steadfastly waiting for her husband. Her son Telemachus has grown up and longs to be as brave as his father. A gray-sailed ship arrives, carrying Ajax, a Trojan sailor. He brings news that Odysseus is still alive, though trapped by a sorceress on a deserted island, and delivers a pouch embroidered with hyacinths by Odysseus. The news strengthens Penelope’s resolve and intimidates the suitors. Telemachus longs even more for his father’s return, and this glimmer of hope rekindles hope in Ithaca.
