Ten-year-old Li Xiaoya gets a score of eight on a math test. The teacher scolds him in class, his classmates shun him, and his mother punishes him, but his grandmother stands up for him. That night, weighed down by frustration, Li Xiaoya falls into a deep sleep.

In his dream, Li Xiaoya arrives in the countryside of 1968 and meets his grandmother, Wang Xinghua, when she is ten years old.

The two become schoolmates, and their teachers patiently guide them. Li Xiaoya wins over the whole class with his hand-drawn animations. Together, they take their clucking old hen to catch bugs in the cotton fields and pick lotus seeds in the pond, then read ancient poems in the open countryside...

Despite the twists and turns of life, their eldest uncle remains openhearted and sincere, true to the ideals he embraced as an ordinary Party member.

Li Xiaoya starts an ancient-poetry animation class and brings Shen Qingfeng and Wang Erni together in marriage.

In his dream, Li Xiaoya returns to 2025 and studies hard, earning recognition as an Outstanding Student.

Li Xiaoya and Wang Xinghua fly with Clucky to the planet Clucky, where they uncover the secret behind how eating bugs makes Clucky smart while eating grain makes her foolish. Light and shadow reveal five scenes from 1968 on the walls of a cave. When space bugs invade, Captain Cat and Clucky join forces to fight them off, and the two hold an interspecies wedding. On the way home, Li Xiaoya falls from the starry sky.

When he wakes from his dream, Li Xiaoya comes to his senses and carefully corrects his test paper. He vows to study hard and become an Outstanding Student. He also writes a book within a book: The Adventures of Clucky, the Superhero of the Cotton Fields, on the Planet Clucky.
