Lin Weiwei wakes up from hunger.
This isn’t the mild hunger of missing a meal in the modern world, that empty feeling in your stomach. It’s a searing pain, as if her internal organs have been hollowed out and every limb is screaming for food. She jolts her eyes open, only to find herself staring not at the familiar white ceiling of her rented apartment, but at the dim, dilapidated roof of a thatched hut. A few withered stalks of straw sway overhead, looking as if they might fall on her face at any moment.
