The Stars Over the Fields tells a story of agricultural development and perseverance.
Village official Chen Wang returns to his hometown, Qingxi Village, after graduating from university, determined to develop modern agriculture. He leads the villagers in working hard and introduces new technologies and crop varieties, including the “Trial No. 3” rice strain. He also experiments with processing agricultural products, such as making rice cakes, hoping these efforts will help the villagers prosper and transform Qingxi Village from a poor, backward place.
Along the way, they face many difficulties. One example is a sudden downpour that forces the upstream reservoir to release water, flooding the village’s rice paddies and threatening to destroy the young rice plants just before harvest. Chen Wang leads the villagers in a desperate fight against the flood. They use methods such as mixing rice straw into the sandbags, and ultimately manage to hold the embankment around the seed-rice fields, saving part of the crop. Even so, the flood causes severe damage to the paddies, and some of the rice cannot be salvaged. To make matters worse, the distributors cancel their supply agreement after hearing the village has been hit by the disaster, making it even harder for Chen Wang and the villagers to rebuild.
But Chen Wang refuses to give up. He and the villagers throw themselves into post-disaster recovery. With help from experts at the provincial agricultural science academy, they work to restore rice production while also considering how to expand sales channels and markets for their agricultural products. They continue striving to make their dream of rural revitalization a reality. The story also portrays the villagers supporting one another and facing hardships together, as well as their love for the land and their longing for a better life.
