The Eternal Night's Pursuer

In a future where the “Great Silence” has erased most civilizations, the surviving megacity of Aetherburg is humanity's last bastion. An invisible wall divides the city. Above lies the dazzling Sky District, controlled by the megacorporation Genesis. Below is the Abyss District, where acid rain and neon mingle beneath skies that never see the sun: the “Sunken Zone.”

Karen Vickers is an “echo detective” living in the Sunken Zone. He is no ordinary private investigator. He has the paranormal ability to sense the powerful emotional memories left on objects simply by touching them. This “gift,” which he sees as a curse, came from the disaster that took his family. Haunted by ghosts of the past day and night, he has become cynical and emotionally distant.

He is used to searching the dark corners of the Sunken Zone for truths long gone cold, in petty missing-person cases and tales of betrayal. Then a bizarre murder in the Sky District drags him out of the mire. The victim is Genesis's chief technology officer. There are no physical traces at the scene, and the only clues could exist in the invisible echoes.

Forced to work with the Sky District's cool, capable head of security, Karen enters an upper world he both despises and barely knows. Every touch draws him deeper into the soul's abyss. What he sees is not only the victim's final terror, but also a vast web of conspiracy involving the city's foundations, technological ethics, and the darkness of human nature.
